Dr. Banks grew up in New York City. Prior to joining the Stanford OHS staff, she had several years of teaching experience at the college level. She completed her BA in History and African American Studies at Wesleyan University and received her MA and Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research interests are race relations, social movements, and religion. When she is not teaching, she enjoys reading, traveling, disc golfing, and watching documentaries.
